Andy Warhol, Artist
"Why do people think artists are special? It’s just another job." Andy Warhol (the same guy who has compared department stores to museums) has said.
While I do not believe that everyone is on board with the idea as fashion being included in the arts, I do think we, as a society, are coming around to the idea.
In 2009, the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in New York (location of the Juilliard school, historically host to operas, ballets, and theater), opened its doors to New York Fashion Week. Such a strong statement and achievement for the fashion industry!
After all, sculptures, paintings, music, poetry, and literature all reflect the fashions of their times. The Mona Lisa would not have the same meaning if she had false eyelashes and wearing a turban. They are just as influenced by culture and society as fashion is.
New York Fashion Week was held at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in 2009
So what’s all this mean? Fashion designers, hair stylist, and makeup artists are starting to be recognized as artists and their creations as art. Fashion as a whole is being enjoyed and respected as a leisure activity such as the opera or (dare I say) a sporting event.
So ladies and gentlemen, one day soon we can openly say fashion is something we do in our spare time without the dreaded response, “So what’s that mean, you like to shop?”
